GUIDELINES FOR WEIGHT CONTROL
You can reduce your weight but it does mean taking two important steps:
- Making some changes to the type and amount of food you eat.
- Increase the amount of or take up some regular exercise.
The following suggestions will help you get started.
Ways to reduce your fat intake
Weight for weight, fat has twice the calories of other foods.
Choose lean cuts of meat, and trim off all fat before cooking.
Remove skin from chicken before cooking.
Reduce the size of your meat and chicken serving.
Use low-fat dairy products, e.g. skim or low-fat milk, low-fat yoghurt, cottage cheese.
Use margarine in small amounts-do not add to vegetables.
Cook without fat-grill, microwave, foil bake.
Cut down on high-fat foods, e.g. cream, processed meats, potato chips, mayonnaise, nuts, take-away foods.
Eat a moderate amount of carbohydrate and extra fibre
Include mixed grain and whole-meal bread and wholegrain cereals, up to 4 serves per day.
Up to 3 pieces of fruit a day.
Eat lots of vegetables, cooked and raw.
Reduce sugar intake
Cut down on sugar, honey, jam, marmalade and golden syrup.
Biscuits, cakes, pastries, ice-cream, chocolate and soft drinks contain large amounts of sugar.
Watch what you drink
Drink more water.
Alcohol is high in calories-use less and mix wine and spirits with water, mineral water, soda water or diet soft drinks.
Use low-calorie cordials or avoid altogether. Dilute fruit juice with water, mineral water or soda water.
Look at your eating habits
Try not to skip meals (especially breakfast) and don’t overeat at the evening meal.
If hungry between meals, choose a vegetable or fruit snack.
